pukicho:

Nothing is sexier than the DUNE books asking you to understand crazy sci-fi jargon in the first paragraph, like bene gesserit, muad'dib, mentat, arakkis, melange, and quizat haderach and then after reading all of that shit that makes no fucking sense, you meet our main character: Paul.

Actually, a lot of the words in “Dune” are derived from real world languages.

“Bene Gesserit” is derived from the Latin phrase “Quamdiu se bene gesserit”, meaning “As long as they are well-behaved”.

Mu’addib is the Arabic word for “Teacher”.

“Mentat” is derived from the Latin word “Mens”, meaning “Mind”. Appropriate for people who think so fast they are basically on the same level as a supercomputer.

“Arrakis” is derived from the name of an actual star, Al-Raqis (the name is Arabic for “The Dancer”).

“Melange” is a French word that means “Variety”, “Mixture”, or “Blend”.

Finally, “Kwisatz Haderach” is derived from the Hebrew term "K'fitzat ha-Derekh", (קְפִיצַת הַדֶּרֶךְ) literally, “The Leap of the Way,” by means of which an initiate may travel some distance instantaneously, appearing to be in two or more places at once.
